Joel Culpepper: Momentum
Joel Culpepper has made steady progress every year since the release of his 2009 mixtape The Adventures of Pensmith and the 2011 follow-up, Joel Culpepper Meets J. Dilla. 2012 marked a breakthrough with the release of Joel’s debut EP Skydive and with that, Joel for the first time garnered attention from BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra in terms of radio airplay, interviews and interaction via social media. George Ergatoudis tweeted “UK’s answer to Frank Ocean?” while Mary Anne Hobbs commented “What a voice, he’ll be a superstar!!” In 2014, Joel was named BBC Introducing‘s ‘Artist of the Week’ and was invited to perform on the BBC Introducing stage at Bestival. In May 2015, Joel joined BRIT Award Winner Paloma Faith on her Australia tour as the main support act. Performing in packed out venues, including the iconic Sydney Opera House, Joel gained new fans and praise from the Australian media for his notable performances.
Joel’s forthcoming EP, Tortoise, features production by Grammy award winning producer Jimmy Hogarth (Amy Winehouse, Paolo Nutini, James Bay); Morgan Nicolls (Gorillaz, Muse); American producer Roy Davis Jr (Mary J Blige, Seal); Swindle (Little Dragon); Jools Holland’s Musical Director Phil Veacock, scored and arranged strings and horns. Tortoise creatively represents another milestone in Joel’s growing music career. It points to the timeless lesson of the ‘Tortoise and the Hare’ story, which listeners can identify with and find inspiration for their own journeys.
“To receive the PRSF Momentum Music Fund at this stage in my career can only mean this… it’s only just beginning. To be recognised for the work I’ve put into ‘Tortoise’ EP over the last two years by PRSF is not only an exciting time, but one I believe is a catalyst for a life changing event. Thank you for the huge support” – Joel Culpepper
