Leo Kalyan: Momentum

When London-based Leo Kalyan uploaded a ‘refix’ of Duke Dumont’s “Need U (100%)” and Jessie Ware’s “Running” to Soundcloud, it appeared online for the purest of reasons; because making it was fun. Delicately anchored around his own distinct vocals, it was the result of Kalyan teaching himself to produce. Notoriety soon followed with blogs picking up on the then unknown artist/producer, leading to him topping the HypeMachine chart. This sense of organically letting things take shape has permeated the self-styled “oceanic beats” that Kalyan has made since: from the percolating electro-soul of “Temptation” (his first original song), to the stuttering majesty of “Over You” – supported by Annie Mac, MistaJam and Huw Stephens amongst others – to last year’s Silver Linings EP which featured lead track “Fingertips” reaching the top of the Spotify worldwide viral charts and being added to the BBC 1Xtra playlist. With widespread global radio support from the likes of Zane Lowe, KCRW and P3, press support from around the world, multiple sold out headline London gigs, a performance at BBC Introducing’s coveted SXSW showcase, and most recently headlining BBC Asian Network’s Future Sounds festival at Maida Vale, Leo Kalyan has proven that he has a sound that luxuriates patiently, washing over you in its own time.
