Sports Team: Momentum
Sports Team have had a peculiarly meteoric 2018, going from word-of-mouth London unknowns, to one of the UK’s most talked about new artists in six short months.
Having first released music in January (the ‘Winter Nets’ EP), the following months have been good to the band with single ‘Kutcher’ made Annie Mac’s ‘Hottest Record in the World’, ‘Camel Crew’ declared Noisey’s ‘best song of 2018 (so far)’, ‘Beverly Rose’ winning Steve Lamacq’s Round Table, the band also headlined the BBC Introducing Stage at Reading and Leeds.
It’s been at their shows though where the band have earned their reputation. September’s sold out headline at London’s 800 capacity SCALA, which the band dubbed their “Robbie at Knebworth moment’’, had all the feel of a coronation, one that saw the six-piece deliver on the buzz that surrounded their early appearances.
It’s on back of this success that Sports Team recently announced their biggest headline show to date at London’s 1500 capacity Electric Ballroom, a staggering coup for a band less than a year into their career. Alongside this flagship show, the band will play 8 headline dates across the UK, capitalising on a year that has seen them rise to the top of the UK live circuit.
The funding from the PRS for music Foundation will go towards 2019 costs associated with the recording and release of new singles, marketing and promotion, and other overheads incurred as the band storm toward their debut album release in early 2020.
