Funding from PRS for Music Foundations has allowed Newham Music to commission a brand new work for voices and small instrumental ensemble by leading composer Gabriel Jackson for the children and young people of the borough of Newham. This project gives the children and young people of the borough the opportunity to have access to a world-class top British composer, writing music specifically for them, with them and about them.
Newham is one of the UK’s most deprived areas, and it has the youngest and the most ethnically diverse population. Singing is a great way to bring everyone together in an inclusive activity and nowhere needs this more than Newham. Gabriel Jackson is a leading composer who writes high quality work that will inspire our young people and thrill audiences. His music is inspired by a wide variety of different cultures which will appeal to the diversity of our children and young people. Gabriel will be working with our young people in a number or creative workshops over the coming months to write a piece entirely based on them, their characters, their cultures and their lives to be first performed at the prestigious music venue, the Troxy.
Newham Music was one of PRS Foundation’s recipients of the David Bedford Music Education Award in 2016.
The David Bedford Music Education Award is given four times a year by PRS for Music Foundation to exceptional education projects involving composers and new music which they have funded. You can read about the most recent David Bedford Music Education Award recipients here.
