Bromley Youth Music Trust: The Open Fund for Organisations

Bromley Youth Music Trust (BYMT), with the help of the PRS Foundation, are delighted to engage alumnus and professional musician James Olsen to create a new piece of music for our youth and adult wind bands. BYMT is the lead for the Bromley Music Education Hub and provides a wide range of quality music services.

James, as a student, previously played the horn in BYMT’s Bromley Youth Concert Band. Now a professional composer, James is going to compose a piece for the Youth Band and its sister alumni band, XYB. The piece will be premiered at BYMT’s Festival of Winds in March 2019, as well as being performed at other national and international music festivals.

James said, “One of the first pieces I composed as a student was for Bromley Youth Concert Band, which was a formative experience for me. Now as a professional composer, I believe that youth and community musicians are in need of new repertoire of the highest quality to perform. I am therefore delighted to have the opportunity to compose for the magnificent and underappreciated wind band genre and for the Youth Band in particular.”

James will also document the entire commission process on his YouTube channel for his growing international online audience of young aspiring composers and musicians.

BYMT is one of PRS Foundation’s recipients of the David Bedford Music Education Award in 2018.

The David Bedford Music Education Award is given four times a year by PRS for Music Foundation to exceptional education projects involving composers and new music which they have funded. You can read about the most recent David Bedford Music Education Award recipients here.

Ian Rowe, Principal of BYMT, said “To be able to commission a new piece for the talented members of Bromley Youth Concert Band (BYCB) is fantastic.  To have the piece written by an alumnus of BYCB is however the real testament to why we teach music. Thank you so much to the PRS Foundation and The David Bedford Music Education Award for making this possible.”
