Pieces for Pauline: A Tribute to Pauline Oliveros

Pieces for Pauline is a half-day event at Café Oto on Sunday 27 May 2018.  It aims to explore and promote Oliveros’ ‘deep listening’ ideas through two concerts, and an open workshop for musicians and non-musicians.

Concert 1 (2pm) featuring improvisers Rhodri Davies, Phil Durrant, Bill Thompson and Mark Wastell
Workshop (4pm) led by Viv Corringham (the resulting improvisation/piece will be included in the evening concert)
Concert 2 (8pm) featuring new pieces created for The Vocal Constructivists and Rhodri Davies by Kerry Andrews, Deborah Edwards, Derek Foster and Janet Oates. Plus two pieces by Pauline Oliveros – one performed by the Vocal Constructivists and one by the entire ensemble

Contakt (Kerry Andrews, Deborah Edwards, Derek Foster) have been working together since 2009 as composer/performers, performing our own as well as the music of established and experimental composers from the 20th and 21st centuries. Rhodri Davies is an internationally renowned composer, free improviser. His performance has been described as ‘astounding’ and ‘explosively beautiful.’ Viv Corringham is a singer and soundscape artist. She is a certified Deep Listening workshop leader. Vocal Constructivists, founded and led by Jane Alden, are a dynamic ensemble specializing in the performance of text and graphic scores that extend traditional notation. Phil Durrant is an improviser/composer/sound artist who was one of the key exponents of the “group voice approach” style of improvised music. Janet Oates is a composer, performer (voice, piano and flute) and conductor. She has written operas, oratorio and short choral works and songs.
