Bascule Chamber Concerts 2018

Composer/curator Iain Chambers returns to Tower Bridge’s Bascule Chamber to fill the atmospheric subterranean Victorian space with a brand new programme. 2018’s concerts see new vocal works performed by the Marian Consort, a dynamic internationally-renowned young early music vocal ensemble, recognized for their fresh approach and innovative presentation.

Performances will spill out for a new commission performed in the Accumulator Chamber – a vast, cylindrical space housing the bridge’s original hydraulic lifting mechanism.

The Bascule Chamber Concerts are also a place for specially-commissioned performance poetry, commissioned from an open call for artists, and written to respond to this unique space.

The Bascule Chamber houses Tower Bridge’s huge counterweights during lifting. When the bridge is at rest, this dramatic brick-lined space stands empty. A newly-commissioned immersive sound walk will take audiences from street level down the 100 steps to the Bascule chamber.

These unmissable, atmospheric concerts provide a unique way of experiencing one of Victorian engineering’s greatest feats.
