My Music - A New Music Theater Piece for 11-16 Year Olds

My Music is a new music-theater piece for 11-16 year olds by Kim Moore and Nicholas Bone, produced by Magnetic North. It explores music’s power in shaping our individuality and how we relate to the wider world. The music we discover in our adolescence often stays with us for the rest of our lives. From 11 or 12, we start to develop our own taste in music, forming strong attachments to certain styles or particular pieces which are often closely tied up with a burgeoning sense of individual identity. The libretto will be created using material drawn from interviews with young people about the importance of music in their lives. Using the approach of verbatim theatre, the libretto will weave together this material with the story of Orpheus – a primal myth of the power of music.

Kim Moore is a Glasgow-based composer and musician who describes her work as “falling in the spaces between theater, dance, film, installation and other collaborations.” Formerly in the band Zoey Van Goey, she is now both a solo-performer and a collaborator across theater, dance and visual arts. Nicholas Bone is a director and theater maker. He is Artistic Director of Magnetic North and has directed all their work to date, including Walden, A Walk at the Edge of the World and Pass the Spoon. Magnetic North commissions, develops and produces new work for performance and runs a highly successful multi-art form artist development programme for both experienced and emerging artists.
