NYO Creative Hub 2018/19: Learning Opportunities for 7 Composers (15-18)

NYO’s Creative Hub comprises 7 teenage composers who participate in NYO Rehearsal Residencies, writing new music, hearing their ideas brought to life by chamber groups of NYO musicians. PRSF will fund 3 Creative Hub residencies (July 2018 to April 2019), providing a special framework for 7 composers (aged 15-18) to collaborate with leading composers & teenage musicians, exploring new sounds together. NYO musicians perform their compositions at free public concerts in world class public venues and concert halls, eg Snape Maltings, Birmingham Symphony Hall and The Barbican, introducing new audiences to contemporary music.

The content of NYO’s Composers Residencies has been designed by its tutor, composer Larry Goves, to enhance the connection between the composers and their peers in the orchestra, to allow a strong peer–to–peer creative process. The music that NYO composers produce is varied, dynamic and full of surprises. It also provides an opportunity for NYO musicians to stretch themselves and engage with new music.

For the first time in 2018, we are inviting back 2016/17 composer alumnus Lauren Marshall as an Assistant Tutor. In the same way that NYO musicians inspire other teenage musicians through our acclaimed NYO Inspire programme in state schools, we believe the opportunity for Lauren to share her experiences with this year’s composers will be particularly meaningful.

“An incredible opportunity…. It’s so important to have the luxury of trying out your ideas with top quality players, and with pre or post main-concert performances you can gain exposure in some amazing venues too.”
