Debut Discs

Debut Discs is NMC Recordings’ acclaimed showcase series for the most gifted composers from the British Isles who have a proven and growing reputation, and a strong selection of works from which to create their first full-length portrait album. Launched in 2012, the series currently features 12 albums; many have achieved exceptional reviews and awards from media worldwide. This exposure has provided a variety of opportunities for the composers involved, including commissions, performances and residencies.

NMC’s Debut Discs are musical calling cards, crucial for talented composers in the early stages of their careers since they enable promoters, commissioners and audiences to hear their work. We know that there is a large and diverse group of composers who would benefit, so we are expanding the series by releasing another 4 albums over the next 2 years. The new series starts with Philip Venables, with further composers to be announced.

As well as raising a composer’s profile worldwide, NMC offers practical professional development support, assisting composers throughout the process of creating and promoting an album. We offer advice on rights and royalties, promotion and marketing; programming an album; and the composer’s role in the recording, editing and mastering process. This equips composers with skills and knowledge that will benefit them throughout their career.

“The release of my Debut Disc with NMC is a huge step for me. I feel that the pieces on the album really make a coherent statement about what my artistic manifesto is all about.” – Philip Venables, composer
