Northern Flyway: Inge Thomson & Jenny Sturgeon

A brand-new creation by Inge Thomson and Jenny Sturgeon, Northern Flyway explores the ecology, folklore, symbolism and mythology of birds and birdsong. Also featuring singer/multi-instrumentalist Sarah Hayes (Admiral Fallow) and the phenomenal vocal sculptor Jason Singh, it draws on such sources as the extensive field recordings of musician/composer and birdsong expert Magnus Robb, Sturgeon’s background as a biologist and Thomson’s home turf of Fair Isle, combining vocal and instrumental composition, sonic experimentation and lush, evocative visuals. Themes of human and avian migration, the seasons’ cycle and humanity’s relationship with nature also resonate through this multi-dimensional, magically immersive experience.

Inge Thomson has been creating music for 20 years, as a composer, lyricist, multi-instrumentalist and long term collaborator with Karine Polwart. Inge’s recent achievements include writing, producing the Creative Scotland funded ‘Da Fishing Hands’ and several BBC commissions including music for the 2017 Scottish BAFTA winning ‘Fair Isle – Living on the Edge’.

Jenny has been creating music for 5 years as a composer and singer songwriter in a solo capacity and with trio ‘Salt House’ having previously worked as a bird ecologist. Recent achievements include a National Trust for Scotland commission ‘The Wren And The Salt Air’ focusing on St Kilda’s wildlife.
