SFTOC 2018: Showcasing Diverse Artists and Evidencing what we do

Sounds from the Other City (SFTOC) is a diverse music and arts festival taking place each year in Salford – it aims to both celebrate and foreground the work of independent promoters in Salford and Manchester, and to draw attention to the off-kilter beauty of Salford, the ‘other city’, by embedding live music and art everywhere, from the local Doctors surgery to churches, pubs and community centres.

SFTOC has evolved into a fiercely independent, vibrant and friendly festival, co-designed by our fellow promoters and audience, and has become synonymous with its community, becoming a celebration of the most exciting emerging names in music. The Independent heralded SFTOC as a ‘’celebration of independence’’ and gave the festival a 5 * review.

Over the years we’ve hosted early-day performances from artists as diverse as Goat Girl, The Ting Tings, James Ferraro, Alt-J, Go-Go Penguin right through to 2017’s Mercury Music Prize winner Sampha and BBC Sound of 2018 nominee IAMDDB.

SFTOC 2018 sees us welcome 24 promoters, collectives and platforms, each one of them representing their own personal slice of what the world of music and performance looks and feels like in 2018. PRS Foundation support has enabled us to programme 15 diverse, cutting-edge artists including Chrystal, Boy Azooga, Pearl City, XamVolo, Suzi Wu and Farhood. It will also enable the Festival team to better evaluate the impact that performing at the festival has had on the careers of emerging artists.
