Solway to Svalbard

Solway to Svalbard is a creative response to the spring migration of the Barnacle Goose, a celebration of the journey that is made, the environments encountered and the communities that are linked. Exploring innovative approaches into composition and live performance, the role of place and the audience within the audio/visual environment, ‘Solway to Svalbard’ will connect the different environments and communities that are encountered by the barnacle goose on its unique journey and how, despite the distance and stark contrast in landscape, we are intrinsically linked to the polar regions. The project will bring together world class players with other established and up and coming players from the Scottish music scene into a high quality immersive body of new music. Bringing cutting edge performance to a rural setting, highlighting its relevance on the larger stage and connecting these wider environmental ideas with the urban.

Stuart Macpherson is a musician, composer and sonic artist based in rural Galloway. His work has a strong focus on place and environment and how we are connected to it, in particular the remote and rural and its relevance on a bigger stage. His works have been performed by a wide variety of music ensembles including Red Note, Scottish Ensemble and McFall’s Chamber. Recently his work has diversified into immersive sound installation and collaborative projects with works shown as part of Dumfries and Galloway’s dark skies event for experimental works, Sanctuary and Glasgow’s Cryptic Nights.
