The Cumnock Tryst: The Open Fund for Organisations
For:
Sir James MacMillan's Celebration of Music in Ayrshire
New music is integral to The Cumnock Tryst, as it was for Benjamin Britten in Aldeburgh and Peter Maxwell Davies in Orkney.
As a composer, James MacMillan believes it is crucial that audiences are exposed to the newest of music, from young composers at the earliest days of their creative careers to the established creators of today. This acts as an inspiration to audiences, stretching their aural experience and giving them the opportunity to hear music that has never been heard before.
This year, our Festival Chorus will perform the Scottish premiere of Cecilia McDowall‘s Stabat Mater, with star baritone Leigh Melrose and Genesis Sixteen, and Nicola Benedetti will perform Mark Anthony Turnage with her trio. Our Artists in Residence, Pandora’s Box with Headspace will show that performers are also creators with their own compositions. James MacMillan will also be working with RCS student composers to create 6 new compositions to be performed by young musicians at the festival. The festival continues to showcase new composers by commissioning a new piece from Scott Lygate to be performed at the festival. This talented young musicians will also play a new piece written specially for him by James MacMillan. This inspiring local festival is also showing how music is accessible for all by working in local schools and with children and adults with disabilities in the creation of their own compositions, which will also be performed during The Tryst.
