Project Description:
Outlands Network – Outlands Network will unite partners across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to present recent commissions by Outlands and The Oram Awards, celebrating Daphne Oram’s centenary and her pioneering role in establishing women at the forefront of electronic music innovation. Featuring new work by NikNak, Dali de Saint Paul, Kathy Hinde, Lia Mazzari, afromerm and abi asisa, the programme honours Oram’s enduring influence while championing a new generation of female & gender expansive artists.
NikNak – Origin: An improvised turntable performance using sounds from Oram’s archive, responding in real time with effects and experimental scratching to create new textures, presented through a spatial, multi-channel speaker set-up.
Dali de Saint Paul, Kathy Hinde & Lia Mazzari – Folly Using extracts from Oram’s An Individual Note (1972), this trio combine archival samples with a 16mm camera-less film made from materials in Oram’s Tower Folly studio, projected visually and sonically via its optical soundtrack. abi asisa & afromerm – 1966 interrupted. A composition for electronically manipulated cello and voice, using two surviving waveform slides from Oram’s Oramics machine as a graphic score to create a transtemporal sonic dialogue with Oram. Outlands Network is an open membership organisation supporting promoters of experimental, interdisciplinary art and music. We connect national and regional communities, uniting organisations and individuals who champion risk taking work. Through touring commissions, professional development and collaboration opportunities for its members, and an annual network gathering, Outlands fosters dialogue and resilience across the UK’s experimental art and music landscape.
