Recording a CD of Harp Music by Paul Patterson

This CD, produced by SFZ Music, will be an important exposé of new music for harp, inspired by an increasing demand for Patterson’s harp music from the UK and the international harp fraternity.

It will provide authoritative performances of Patterson’s descriptively-titled harp works: Spiders, Bugs, Lizards, Armistice (Reflection and Hope), Spirals and Avian Arabesques. These feature many important contemporary techniques, such as glissandos with the tuning key, pedal glissandos for jazzy effects, pitch-bends, rapid bisbigliando, playing with the finger nails and using the sound board percussively.

The CD will assist potential new performers in interpretation, and encourage further opportunities for the pieces to be chosen for concerts and as set works in competitions worldwide.

Patterson has included in the works a range of different sound effects and timbres. Dramatic, serious and humorous qualities abound which attract and hold listeners’ attention. In collaboration with the Harp Department of the Royal Academy of Music, he has given the harp a new and more determined voice, and all the performers are past and present alumnae. This complete recording of Patterson’s harp works will serve to demonstrate the versatility of the harp as a solo instrument, and will both inform and entertain.
