Philip Herbert: Classical Next

Philip Herbert was born in London (UK) and is an award winning British Composer with eclectic musical interests. He has written choral and chamber music, music for film, dance and for the concert hall. He was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Music Degree as an alumna of the University of Winchester in October 2022.

Philip has followed a portfolio career, combining teaching, performance, a graduate assistantship in a university music department, curation, writing for publication: developing workshops and projects, assessing music projects for the Arts Council of England, Broadcasting and Composing.

Philip’s music has been performed by a number of ensembles including the BBC Singers, Chineke! Orchestra, the Sphinx Virtuosi, the BBC Concert Orchestra, Sinfonia ViVA, the Royal Ballet Sinfonia, the Philharmonia, Orchestra of the Swan, London Mozart Players, the Detroit, Cleveland, Houston, Nashville, Minnesota and Charlotte Symphony Orchestras, to name some. Recent compositions include a String Quartet commissioned by Serendipity UK for the 2022 Let’s Dance International Festival – entitled ‘ Siren Calls: to an illusive journey,’ which was choreographed with 2 different stylistic approaches from Monique Jonas and Thomas Prestø for separate performances. ‘Towards Renewal’ reflecting post covid optimism, was commissioned by the BBC Concert Orchestra for the 2022 PRS Foundation and Southbank Centre New Music Biennial with a premiere in Coventry Cathedral and a performance in the Queen Elizabeth Hall, Southbank Centre. Philip was one of 4 composers who commissioned contribute to the Four Seasons of the Caribbean Project, inspired by the music of Vivaldi in 2023.
