Phronesis are a jazz trio, led by Copenhagen-born London-based bass player Jasper Høiby. They formed in 2005 following Høiby’s graduation from the Royal Academy of Music, London and perform entirely new music written by Høiby.
In 2010 Phronesis were nominated for ‘Best Jazz Ensemble’ in the Parliamentary Jazz Awards, featured on the front cover of Jazzwise Magazine, and nominated for ‘Best Jazz Act’ at the MOBO Awards. Their third album ‘Alive’ (Edition), was chosen as ‘Jazz Album of the Year’ by Jazzwise and MOJO Magazines.
Phronesis have completed two UK tours supported by the Jazz Services Touring Support Scheme and have performed at Brecon, Glasgow and London Jazz Festivals in the UK. In 2010 the trio performed concerts in Switzerland, France, Belarus and at Copenhagen and North Sea Jazz Festivals.
The PRSF funded Phronesis to showcase at the Montreal International Jazz Festival in July 2011 (their first visit to Canada), where they performed to an audience of 3,000 including promoters from across the world and press. Their successful appearance has led to further international bookings and their first North American press recognition.
