Nia Wyn: PPL Momentum Grantee
Welsh neo soul artist Nia Wyn has a talent for raw and powerful storytelling. Set within a kind of unorthodox, engrossing vocal, immediately marking her out against the backdrop of emerging young female artists coming out of the UK – and conjures a very exciting, defiant charisma that’s both hard and warm. Growing up in North Wales, Nia was exposed to a wide range of music from northern soul, the jazz-blues of Billie Holiday to hip hop icons Nas and Lauryn Hill.
Having worked with Paul Weller and supported both Weller and Paloma Faith live, Nia has attracted support from the likes of DIY, Wonderland, CLASH, EARMILK, BBC R1, 6 Music, BBC Introducing and Radio Wales. In October 2020, Nia’s track Who Asked You was included in the FIFA 21 soundtrack, and she performed on EA SPORTS’ World Premiere live stream event to promote the game’s release. In March 2021 she released of second EP Take A Seat digitally and on vinyl. The project covered issues around mental health, identity, sexuality and relationships, demonstrating the authenticity, range and honesty Nia brings to her songwriting.
The PPL Momentum Fund is supporting Nia Wyn to go on tour with Paul Weller in late 2021, contributing to costs such as tour management, session musician fees, accommodation, travel and sound engineering. In addition to the tour, the funding will go towards two music videos for new singles around the time of the tour.
