Problem Patterns: Women Make Music
Problem Patterns is a ferocious, four-piece, queer punk band from Belfast, Northern Ireland, comprised of Alanah Smith, Bethany Crooks, Beverley Boal and Ciara King. They formed in November 2018 and have gigged relentlessly, released multiple singles and an EP. The band does not have a singular frontperson, opting instead to switch roles and instruments, to ensure each member in the group has a voice. Known for their ferocious live performances, they were nominated for Best Live Act at the Northern Ireland Music Prize in 2020. They have received air play on KEXP, RTE 2FM and BBC Radio Ulster and been part of numerous compilation records, including Third Bar’s “The Fight Is Not Over” which aimed to capture the protest music of Belfast’s most vocal and impassioned bands.

Now is a crucial time for Problem Patterns; independently producing all their music to date, the next step is the creation of a debut album. Going into the studio in 2022, they will be creating music that embodies who they are and what they believe in, that encapsulates the experiences of women and queer people in NI. They hope that through their music – their debut album & live shows on tour – they can create a sense of empowerment, solidarity and excitement for the future, both in NI and further afield.
