Lento by Howard Skempton: Resonate

About the piece

Lento is music of extraordinary directness and simplicity. It’s an enigmatic and hypnotic work within which shifting modal chords progress through the orchestra creating a chorale-like, almost architectural form beneath a calm melodic surface. Lento is very accessible and is an ideal gateway into the world of other contemporary composers.

About the composer

Howard Skempton has worked as a composer, accordionist, and music publisher. Renowned for the distinctive clarity of his musical language, in recent years he has concentrated increasingly on writing choral and vocal music. His choral commissions include works for the BBC Singers and the Belfast Philharmonic Society.

Championed by the Ulster Orchestra
