Romarna Campbell: Women Make Music
Romarna Campbell’s storytelling begins with the drums. The nomadic spirit of this exciting drummer, producer and composer lives in her jazz and hip-hop-infused music. Her irrepressible energy can be heard on ‘Inherently Political’, a super-charged sonic assault on racism that immediately won favour with Anne Frankenstein, Jazz FM’s Tony Minvielle and crowned by Jamz Supernova as New Name of the Week.
Her independently-released kaleidoscopic debut ‘25 Songs For My 25th Birthday’ features Soweto Kinch, Tomeka Reid and Lady Sanity, taking us deeper into her world of resonant frequencies and conscious vibrations. Having honed her craft at Berklee College of Music, Tomorrow’s Warriors and the Notebenders, Romarna stands on the shoulders of giants and is drawing inspiration from the view as she beats a path forward that is very much her own.
Romarna’s piano trio, with Mutale Chashi and Cenk Esen, will create a live album including special guests DJ NikNak and Mariam Rezaei on turntables. Aiming to push boundaries and combine elements of contemporary jazz and electronic music in a new and translatable way by capturing the music in its most honest and spontaneous form. Furthermore, the ensemble will tackle major issues that the industry continues to see; specifically, women improvisers on non-traditional instruments such as drums and turntables, prove the ideology of cultural and heritage diversity in the industry with music as their point of commonality and demystifying the recording process for their audience who will contribute to the creation of the record that they wouldn’t normally participate in.
