Rona: Women Make Music
Time to go for it: 5 Singles in 2022
Rona Mac (she/her,) is a self-invented, genre-fusing, queer singer-songwriter bringing us guitar driven tracks which provide a hooky bed for her haunting vocals and sophisticated lyricism, resulting in raw, lo-fi indie-pop heavily influenced by Americana-Folk and Country. She records and produces in her caravan at home in rural West Wales, and her music is imbued with her surroundings of rugged cliffs and wide open spaces. Hence, her music comes unfiltered and full of feeling, as she says “If I can talk about things we’ve been told we shouldn’t, and help people connect to feelings they tucked away in their teens, then I’ll be happy when I’m old”.”
I’ll be creating 5 singles from start to finish in my caravan in Wales, in preparation for an album in 2023. This next batch of music, is dedicated to a best mate who took her own life during the pandemic, and she was an incredible songwriter herself as well as my biggest cheerleader from a young age. Her death led to an outpouring of songs, as songs were what we loved best. And so, I want to really dig into it and allow the songs to take form, building on everything I’ve learnt in the last few years of creating music under ‘Rona Mac’. I want to up my game on every level – songwriting, recording, production, mastering and release strategy. Developing these skills requires time, and that’s what this funding has afforded me. Time to go for it.
