Saffron (TDN 2024)
Founded in Bristol, UK in 2015 by Laura Lewis-Paul, Saffron operates as a non-profit organisation that primarily offers training in music production, sound engineering and DJing, as well as running an artist development programme and record label. Saffron’s aim is to advance gender equality in the music tech sector by creating a safe space for women, non-binary people and other minority genders to learn and build confidence. We want to inhabit traditionally male-dominated music tech spaces and become visible role models for others.
Across 3 years we’ll run two in-depth 18-month Artist Development Programs for Black women and non-binary artists. They’ll produce new music for release and showcase events, plus music tech upskilling, industry teaching and peer support. We’ll reconnect with past participants to support their ongoing growth through funding and industry opportunities. This talent development program specifically works with Black women, trans and nonbinary people in the South West. Participants will engage in one of 3 bespoke programs that run for 18 months per cohort, through tailored access to masterclasses, Saffron members club, funding, media opps, performances, studio space, industry contacts, mentoring, and more. As well as empowering them with knowledge and skills, the key takeaway for artists is strengthening their community and music network, which will allow them to flourish and progress in the industry beyond the timescale of the program. Another key aspect of the program will involve working more deeply with members of our previous artist development cohorts. Through targeted consultation and feedback, theirl qualitative and quantitative data will help us to refine our support for new cohorts, whilst strengthening our impact and evidence to influence and action tangible change across the wider grassroots music community.
