Sally Beamish: Women Make Music

Sally Beamish was born in London in 1956.  Her music embraces many influences; particularly jazz and Scottish traditional music.  She is one of the PRS for Music Foundation’s New Music 20×12 Cultural Olympiad composers and was BBC Radio 3 Composer of the Week in February 2012.  Between 1998 and 2002 she was Composer in Residence with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and Swedish Chamber Orchestra.

The Scottish Chamber Orchestra is one of Scotland’s five National Performing Arts Companies, and is internationally recognised as one of the finest chamber orchestras in the world.  Formed in 1974, it is one of Scotland’s foremost cultural ambassadors.  The Orchestra appointed exciting young British conductor Robin Ticciati to the post of Principal Conductor in 2009.

Through its funding award, PRS for Music Foundation has supported the commissioning of a new work by Sally Beamish.  It will be premiered by the Scottish Chamber Orchestra as a part of the SCO Autumn Classics Tour in September 2013 and form a part of the celebrations surrounding the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Flodden, drawn together under the auspices of FLODDEN 500.
