Sonic Bothy: The Open Fund for Organisations

Sonic Bothy Ensemble is an award-winning, inclusive group of musicians with and without additional support needs, some of whom work and perform as part of mainstream festivals in Scotland and beyond. Recent performances include CCA, Glasgow; Tusk Festival, Gateshead; City Halls, Glasgow. Previous appearances include Sound Festival; Counterflows; GIO Fest. In 2018 Sonic Bothy Ensemble released their first album Fields to warm critical reception.

‘Public Inconvenience’ is the commission of a new experimental music work by Sonic Bothy Ensemble. It is an allegory on the social and medical models of disability, where most basic human needs are not met, or met with varying success. The piece aims to draw awareness to the lack of access to public toilets and the impact on disabled people – something that isn’t the cosiest of topics – but opens up wider questions of lack of access. Working with fixed media recordings, improvisation and found materials this piece will explore DADA-inspired responses to the theme. Sonic Bothy Ensemble bring an eclectic line up of fixed media, strings, found objects, voice, harmonium, winds, percussion and piano to the creation of this new 20-30 minute work for performance or recording in 2021.
