Talent Development Partner 2017: Psappha

For:

Psappha Talent Development Programme

Established for 25 years, Psappha is the only stand-alone, professional contemporary classical music ensemble in the North of England. Supporting composers at all career stages is crucial to their mission. The talent development programme supported by PRS Foundation is embedded in Psappha’s artistic programme for the year, through their Manchester Series (supporting composers across all career stages) and the “Composing For…” schemes (supporting emerging composers).

“Composing For…” schemes will provide in-depth support for 24 emerging composers, supporting the creation of 24 new works for solo instruments and for small ensembles. From this year Psappha will start to introduce non-Western instruments to the scheme. Participants will work with Psappha’s musicians through a series of bespoke sessions culminating in a filming day for each scheme, where they make multi-camera HD films of each new work which the composers can use to promote their work and support their career development.

Psappha’s Manchester Series will include three world premières and two UK premières, and will support a total of 12 living composers through the high-quality public performance and film-recording of their work. The series will showcase the best of contemporary music in its different forms and guises; the programme has been specially curated to bring together an eclectic mix of new music, including works inspired by jazz, popular and folk music, and to highlight and give a platform to highly talented female composers.
