Psappha: Talent Development Partner 2019

Psappha has a passion for creating and performing contemporary classical music. In the past 27 years we have commissioned hundreds of composers and inspired audiences with new music made in the heart of Manchester by world-class musicians. Supporting and developing talented music creators is central to our mission.

Our Talent Development Programme is embedded in our artistic programme, through our flagship Manchester Series of performances and our ‘Composing for…’ programme.

Through ‘Composing for…’ we will support the creation of 24 new works by 24 emerging and early-career composers. Participants work with us for 6 months through a series of bespoke sessions culminating in a filming day for each scheme where we make multi-camera HD films of each new work. These are made available via Psappha’s YouTube channel. The completed works will also be considered for inclusion within Psappha’s main 2020-21 performance season.

Psappha’s Manchester Series comprises five performances that showcase the changing face of contemporary classical music over the last 100 years. The key Talent Development Programme elements are: the 2019-20 Peter Maxwell Davies commission from George Stevenson; a commission from Russian-British composer Alissa Firsova; and two performances that showcase a selection of works from our 2018-19 ‘Composing for…’ programme. The Firsova and Stevenson commissions will be supported by Psappha workshops.
