Red Note Ensemble LTD: Talent Development Partner 2019

Red Note Ensemble is Scotlandʼs leading, award-winning contemporary music ensemble. We develop new music, new music creators and audiences for new music at all levels – local, national and international.

Over the 10 years since we were founded, Red Note has developed its own, comprehensive, year-round programme of commissioning, development and performance of contemporary music, focusing primarily but not exclusively upon developing Scottish and Scottish-based creators, and also addressing inequalities of access and opportunity within Scotland. Our work embraces that critical first engagement with composition for young people at school and community level – especially within high-deprivation areas – right through to work with students at conservatoires and universities, to early-stage composer development programmes offering first public engagement with a composer’s work, and full commissions to be toured and produced nationally and internationally, with recordings wherever possible.

In recent years we have become concerned by the lack of variation in the backgrounds of the composers we are working with. We are looking to collaborate with other Talent Development Partners to develop the visibility and accessibility of all of our programmes, and in particular our flagship 2019 Noisy Nights series. This will develop, perform and promote 30 new short works by young and emerging composers from. 10 works will be selected from an open call 3 times in the year, developed through workshops, and then given performances in informal settings in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen.

We’re looking forward to finding and nurturing amazing new music talent this year!
