Tamsin Elliott: Women Make Music

Tamsin Elliott is a multi-instrumentalist, composer and film-maker based in Bristol, UK. With roots in the folk music of the British Isles, her interests and playing styles extend to the musics of Eastern Europe, the Mediterranean and the Middle East as well as minimalism and experimental music. She currently plays in and writes for critically acclaimed fusion project Solana, who have released several albums and toured extensively. She also performs in various traditional folk and ceilidh ensembles, and recent collaborations include with oud player Tarek Elazhary and percussionist Salma Amr in Cairo, Egypt.

Tamsin’s debut solo album ‘FREY’ deals with themes of limbo, pain, healing, acceptance and grief, and reflects the microcosm of her personal experience with debilitating chronic illness, alongside wider themes of societal disconnection and environmental grief. The material inhabits a “contemporary-trad” soundworld, explored through her accordion, harp, flutes and voice, with moments of experimentalism using effects, drones and field recordings.

Tamsin gratefully acknowledges the support of Sound and Music’s ‘New Voices’ artist development programme, and PRS Foundation’s Women Make Music grant in creating this new work. “There is a rich thread of collaboration throughout [Tamsin’s work], one which both celebrates and highlights the coming together of cultures and music… The results are always refreshingly inventive and exciting” – Folk Radio UK

“Tamsin’s accordion recreates the thrill of the casbah whilst [her] flute and whistle take us on spellbinding, almost mystical, journeys which soar with unexpected twists and turns” – Outline Magazine

The grant will be used for Tamsin Elliott’s debut album ‘FREY’
