Trish Clowes’ ensemble Tangent has a programme of activities over 2014, which come in three parts: the first, an appearance at Trish’s festival Emulsion 3; the second, to commission two new works for Tangent written by Trish and Tangent guitarist Chris Montague; and the third, to tour the UK.

Tangent ranges in size from trio to nonet, mainly performing contemporary jazz written by Trish. Some of the UK dates will be festival/orchestral/radio appearances and others will be provincial venues such as arts centres and volunteer-run jazz venues.

Central to Tangent’s 2014 dates is an appearance at Emulsion 3 – a two-night festival at the Village Underground, featuring five ensembles, curated by Trish and composer Luke Styles. (Emulsion 1 commissions were supported by the PRSF, with repeat performances at Emulsion 2). Two of the new works presented at Emulsion 3 will be Tangent’s new commissions from Trish and Chris, and Trish’s piece will feature ECM artists ‘Food’ (duo of British saxophonist Iain Ballamy and Norwegian drummer Thomas Stronen). These new works (Trish’s in adapted form) will be added to Tangent’s repertoire, with numerous repeat performances on tour. Emulsion 3 is also supported by Arts Council England and there is a development scheme for the musicians of Emulsion, supported by the Jerwood Charitable Foundation.
