Tenebrae: The Open Fund for Organisations
We are delighted to be working in conjunction with acclaimed composer Josephine Stephenson to compose a new work which will feature in our twentieth anniversary celebration programme ‘Humanity and Liberty’. This programme combines Josephine’s first substantial work for choir (>10 minutes) with new and existing choral works with spoken drama, and acts as an artistic response to the pandemic, celebrating the triumph of freedom and love over adversity. Through a number of performances across the country, and digital presentations, we hope to engage with new audience members and in audiences in new locations.
We are pleased to strengthen our association with such a vibrant and original composer, expanding the scale of her writing for vocal forces. In her own words “I have secretly hoped for the opportunity of writing music for Tenebrae ever since my beginnings as a soprano with them five years ago and I am now truly excited at the idea of it being possible, together with the possibilities to push the scope of my choral writing further. Being very familiar with every singer’s voice and the choir’s sound in general, I intend to write music that really uses their specific expressive and dramatic qualities.”
