Joanna Marsh Griffiths: The Composers’ Fund
Joanna Marsh is a British composer who divides her time between the UK and the UAE.
Having a presence in the Middle East has lead to many unique opportunities including a commission from Dubai Opera to write an orchestral work for the first BBC Proms in Dubai 2017, a commission for HM The Queen’s visit to Abu Dhabi, a work celebrating the UAE for which she created an orchestral score that forms a drawing of the Burj Khalifa. Themes from Dubai also feature in Joanna’s recent opera “My Beautiful Camel”, will be performed in New York in May 2019.
Joanna is currently Composer in Residence at Sidney Sussex, Cambridge and also Co-Founder and Artistic Director of ChoirFest Middle East in Dubai.
The grant from the PRS Composer’s fund will provide the funding for a recording of Joanna Marsh’s cantata, “Pearl of Freedom” (the story of suffragette Emily Davison) with the choir of Royal Holloway, University of London and the London Mozart Players.
This recording will form a third of the content on a portrait CD of her work planned for 2020 and this piece will also exist online as a film with specially commissioned illustrations by Harriet Morris.
Joanna said:
“Without any means of showcasing your work with recordings, a composer’s output invisible. I’m deeply grateful for the PRS Composers Fund for helping me to produce this recording, which will provide crucial visibility for what I do and an important resource for my career moving forward”.
