Nicola LeFanu: The Composers’ Fund

The PRS Foundation Composers’ Fund award will enable the production and release of an album of my orchestral works on the NMC label. It will be Nicola’s first full portrait album for NMC. The CD will feature the BBCSO and the RTE NSO playing four major works, from my 1973 Proms commission ‘The Hidden Landscape’ to the recent dramatic scena ‘The Crimson Bird’ (RPS commission).

Nicola said:

“These days it is a challenge to find opportunities for orchestral performance and commission, especially for someone of my age, so an orchestral album on such a prestigious label will be hugely advantageous for me.”

Nicola LeFanu has composed around one hundred works for a variety of mediums. Her music is published by Edition Peters and by Novello and has been widely played, broadcast and recorded. She has composed eight operas, which have been staged in UK, Ireland and USA.  She was born in 1947; her mother was the composer Elizabeth Maconchy. LeFanu studied at Oxford, RCM and Harvard and is active in many aspects of the musical profession. In April 2017 she celebrated her seventieth birthday; there were premières of five new commissions and she was BBC Radio 3 ’Composer of the Week’.
