John Harle’s friends and colleagues have written fourteen short works for saxophone and piano for his sixtieth birthday. Music by some of the most influential composers of today heard on one CD, the programme then tours in spring 2017. This is a special chance to hear the master of the saxophone at the peak of his powers. The pianist is Steve Lodder, who has also arranged a special work for John.

The saxophonist has invited 14 composers with whom he has been associated over his very long and illustrious career to write him a new work for sax and piano.  The composers are so wide ranging there is literally something for everyone! There is Sir Harrison Birtwistle, Michael Nyman, or Carl Davis among the seniors through the younger years and diversity that is Elvis Costello, Branford Marsalis, Graham Fitkin, and John Lunn, and in the younger bracket Dario Marianelli, and Daniel L Harle who is currently enjoying massive success in the pop recording world of SONY music. Add to that the likes of Mike Westbrook, Gavin Bryars, Sally Beamish, Christopher Gunning and Oliver Leith…

The project ensures that John’s 60th year will leave a legacy to all saxophonists well into the future, increasing the repertoire, as John has done so often in his career, with a collection of fascinating saxophone and piano music.
