un.procedure: Women Make Music
un.procedure – debut album record and release
un.procedure are an experimental-electronic outfit, made up of synth player Piera Onacko, drummer Nathan England-Jones and alto-saxophonist Cassie Kinoshi. un.procedure’s sound flies anywhere between exploratory, psychedelic textures and doomy, guttural grooves. Within a bed of electronic-led soundscapes and the dark drone of processed saxophone, industrial beats thrum and pulse, calling to mind elements of 70s sci-fi cinema, kosmische Musik and the avant-garde jazz movement of the late 60s. Cemented by a backdrop of transportive collage projections created and controlled by visual artist Guri Bosh, their immersive live set has been described as a “narcotic and dystopian journey”.
un.procedure will be using their Women Make Music grant to record and release their much-anticipated debut album. The original material has been developed as part of a project commissioned by Cheltenham Jazz Festival, performed for the first time in May 2024. The trio expanded their lineup to include a string quartet, woodwind and processed poetry. The music was created around imagined spaces, impossible architecture and giving voice to emotions, brought to life as ever by the visuals of Guri Bosh.
un.procedure have always been a band with improvisation at its heart. In this new work, the music takes a sharp turn into new territory, combining the raw intensity of their core trio sound with the precision of orchestration.
