Short Project Title: Debut release with augmented harp, acoustic and electronic sound
Project Description: Vivienne Griffin’s debut recorded release will be developed from a live performance commissioned for Sonic Arts Week Middlesbrough. The work continues Griffin’s practice of creating experimental music using a motorised augmented harp, voice and modular synthesis, combining acoustic instruments with electronic processing. The recording will be made live by sound engineer Margo Broom at RAK Studios, featuring cellist Oona Lowther. Griffin’s work has been performed at Café Oto, Transmediale Berlin, and Somerset House London, and has received coverage in The Guardian and The Irish Times. Previous collaborators include Úna Monaghan and Zeena Parkins. The release will be distributed through Industrial Coast, an independent label based in Middlesbrough.
Bio: Vivienne Griffin was born in Dublin, Ireland. They studied fine art at Hunter College, City University of New York, supported by a Fulbright Scholarship, and recently completed a PhD in music at SARC: The Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Sound and Music. Griffin’s practice spans time-based and site-specific works, sculpture, works on paper, and experimental sound. Their work ranges in form, from an augmented self-playing harp and a video work created within a virtual world to a long-running series of black-ink drawings. Moving between ancient technologies and emerging media, Griffin frequently shifts materials and modes as part of their practice.
