WINGATES is one of Britain’s oldest and finest brass bands. The Wingates Band celebrates its 140th birthday in 2013. To mark the occasion, with the financial support from PRS for Music Foundation we are able to commission Lucy Pankhurst to compose a new work for brass band, folk singer and electronics.
Wingates have a very close association with fellow Westhoughton musicians, The Houghton Weavers and lead vocalist, Tony Berry, is also a trustee of the band. Lucy has been the band’s composer-in-residence since 2007 and is very experienced in writing for brass. She has won several awards, including A BASCA British Composer Award and the John Golland Award during her association with Wingates.
We would like to celebrate this long-standing relationship with both the Weavers and Lucy Pankhurst in a collaborative performance venture.
The work will ‘travel’ from 1873 to present day, focusing on influences from contemporaneous folk music and events. Live electronics will also be used, in addition to a CD track to accompany part of the performance.
