Issie Barratt: Women Make Music

The PRS for Music Foundation’s Women in Music grant awarded to composer and artistic director Issie Barratt will fund the commissioning and development of 3 new and eclectic works, written specifically for a newly formed all-female dectet of improvising composers. Known for the breadth of their musical experience and expertise across many genres, the ensemble’s members (of voice; soprano/alto saxophone; tenor sax doubling flute and violin; baritone sax; trumpet/flugel doubling electronics; trombone; cello; percussion; accordion doubling sax and bass) have been hand-picked specifically for their contrasting approaches to group improvisation within composition and clear influences of their diverse cultural heritage.

The three composers commissioned by this grant are:

Artistic Director and baritone player, Issie Barratt: Scottish National Jazz Orchestra, Bohüslan Big Band, Voice of the North. Founder of Fuzzy Moon Records, TrinityLaban Jazz Department and National Youth Jazz Collective. Recipient of Parliamentary Jazz Award 2014. Shortlisted for Paul Hamlyn Award for Artists 2012.

Trumpet player Yazz Ahmed: Toshiko Akiyoshi, Kenny Wheeler, Steve Williamson, Courtney Pine, Sir John Dankworth, Troykestra, Radiohead, These New Puritans. Shortlisted Paul Hamlyn Award 2016. LSO Soundhub Composer 2015. Recipient Birmingham Jazzlines’ Fellowship 2014 and Serious & Jerwood TakeFive Fellowship 2013.

Tori Freestone: Flautist/violinist/Tenor Saxophonist: The Ivo Neame Quintet and Octet, Compassionate Dictatorship, Fringe Magnetic, LJO, N-Circle Jazz Orchestra, Creative Jazz Orchestra, ‘Orquesta Timbala’, Andy Sheppard, Dave Manington Septet

This project provides an incredibly rare and unique opportunity to explore composition and improvisation with other women “rather than continuing to find ourselves the only-woman-improviser in the band”.
