Liz Johnson: Women Make Music

‘Scintilla Lab’ is a work-in-progress event showcasing a brand new multidisciplinary team led by composer Liz Johnson. Scintilla is a unique, rich tapestry of poetry, music, dance and live electronics, weaving in layers that combine to transform and shape-shift, inspired by the poetry of David Hart’s ‘Crag Inspector’.

Scintilla explores notions of isolation through wild exterior landscapes and the interior of the mind. The project was conceived at a time when Liz herself was suffering isolation due to a serious health breakdown, and she set out to examine the struggle to find one’s own true voice in the world, and searching for, but not always achieving, a calm centre.

Each element of the performance will float in its own layer, combining to create a space between abstraction and concrete narrative. Choreographer/dancer Dane Hurst, clarinettist Jack McNeill and digital artist James Dooley have each been given their own space to create responses to Liz’s original framework for the work, allowing unexpected synchronicities to occur and generating an organic structure informed by process.

The Scintilla Lab event will include an in depth critical response process with audience members, providing Liz with constructive feedback about the work-in-progress, feeding into the next R&D stage for Scintilla.

Liz Johnson (b.1964) is ‘a major composer deserving wide recognition’ (Divine Art). Her music encompasses an immense range from the smallest miniatures to expansive, large-scale, ambitious and multifaceted works. Liz’s music is published by Composers Edition. Her debut double album ‘Intricate Web’ MSV 77206 is available here.
