Woody Boase: Early Career Promoter Fund
Concise Description: An extended-hours live electronic event at SOUP, featuring international and local acts. Plus mentorship to improve our booking practices and our long term strategy
Bio: Scoundrel is a Manchester-based collective championing forward-thinking, dub-influenced bass music. Formed as a result of a shared love of the music and in response to the city’s relative lack of spaces for deeper dub-wise sounds, the group has grown from DIY beginnings into a platform for both local talent and boundary-pushing international artists. Starting out at XLR in South Manchester with the founders investing £50 each and playing themselves, Scoundrel has since built a strong community and gone on to sell out SOUP multiple times. Their line-ups have featured artists such as Beatrice M., Mankiyan, Kincaid, Harba, Significant Other, KD22LR, GINA, aNNa, Harpriya and Naima, alongside the founders and residents who are themselves active DJs and producers. Scoundrel prides itself on being a strong platform and safe space for people of all backgrounds. Beyond bookings, Scoundrel places huge emphasis on visual identity, in-depth and genuinley informative artist profiles and hosting that welcomes performers into the city and its scene. The funded activity will see Scoundrel expand its scope with their next event at SOUP and a headline appearance from New York’s Livwutang. By bringing globally respected artists into a grassroots independent venue, the collective aims to deepen Manchester’s relationship with contemporary soundsystem music while continuing to nurture its growing grassroots audience.
