Vale of Glamorgan Festival: The Open Fund for Organisations
The Vale of Glamorgan Festival’s mission is to support, develop and showcase the work of the most talented composers living today. The Young Composer Development Programme will provide six composers who are launching their composition careers with intensive mentoring by leading composers – resulting in the creation of new works that will be recorded and shared during the festival. The young composers will have the relatively rare opportunity to workshop their ideas with musicians ahead of their premieres.
The programme will be tailored to each composer’s needs – to help them realise their potential, develop their career path and produce exciting new music. The programme will also support one of the brightest rising stars in UK composing – Sarah Jenkins. A recent graduate from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Sarah won BBC Young Composer 2017 and her music has been performed by BBCNOW, Cheltenham Music Festival and Aurora.
The Young Composer Development Programme will see her positioned as a Featured Composer of the Vale of Glamorgan Festival – presenting several of her works, at both chamber and orchestral level, alongside composer talks. This includes a concert performance by the BBC NOW which will be broadcast on BBC Radio three. A new commission will feature in the festival alongside work by internationally renowned composers. This new work will then be toured to schools – to help engage children with Sarah’s music and to seek to inspire the next generation of young composers.
