Ronika: Momentum
Momentum Music Fund Recipient 2014
Ronika is a singer, producer, DJ and video maker, originally hailing from Nottingham. Whilst working as a sound engineer and DJing in venues around the city, she began making music inspired by the likes of Egyptian Lover and Afrika Bambaataa. Her debut album, Selectadic was named after Nottingham’s iconic independent record-store, which closed its doors for the final time in 2009. As if by browsing through the shelves themselves, it assimilates a crate-digger love of disco, hip-hop, house, R&B and electro-soul into Ronika‘s effortless grasp of modern pop.
Selectadisc was released in summer 2014 to significant critical acclaim (“A Nottingham-born disco alchemist” Guardian, 4/5; “A triumph” Mojo, 4/5). With additional support across Radio 1, 6Music and 1Xtra – not to mention Nile Rogers – Ronika is already lining up a wave of new material and exciting collaborations for the year ahead. And though the spirit of the Selectadisc store lives on in countless different ways, you can tally up a good few of those in the DIY spirit of Ronika. Her songs filter an array of classic sounds and hard-worn experiences into something fresh, feel-good, and fulfilling. She has emerged, says the NME, as “one of the most exciting new British pop stars (and producers) in years.”
