Since their genesis in 2011, Outfit have marked themselves as an independent-minded and experimental band not afraid to toy with pop conventions and their audience’s expectations. Following up their critically acclaimed debut Performance, Outfit toured with Everything Everything, played the 6Music Festival, Festival No. 6, End of the Road and Pitchfork Paris as well as several sold out London headline dates, showing that the band could thrive as much in the live arena as they could in their home studio space – a Brutalist block of flats in Liverpool.
They returned to record Slowness, the band’s second full length LP, released in June on new label home Memphis Industries. The album paints a portrait of distance using haunting piano, piercing synthesizers and guitars, all underpinned by their trademark rhythm section. It dwells on physical distance between lovers, the emotional distance when we return, and the ways in which we imagine each other thousands of miles apart. The album’s contrasting textures and timbres recall late period Talk Talk and other more expansive New Wave outsiders, but there is a deep sense of modern life to Slowness.
Since the album’s release the band have played Field Day, Parklife and Latitude festivals, with a UK/EU tour in place for September. With increasing interest from US based sites such as Stereogum and Brooklyn Vegan, their trip to CMJ 2015 catches Outfit at an exciting time in their development.
