National Youth Choir: Young Composers Scheme 2024
The National Youth Choirs of Great Britain is a registered charity (515660) that exists to empower young people through the life-changing experience of singing together. We work nationally to extend musical opportunities to young people from all communities and backgrounds, support the development of talented young musicians, and engage and inspire audiences through exciting choral performances. We believe these opportunities transform young lives.
The Young Composers Scheme (YCS) is aimed at talented young choral composers, who are in the early stages of forging their professional careers. The scheme offers an unrivalled opportunity to experiment with and realise original new choral works, develop their style of writing, grow their professional networks and gain invaluable insights and skills from the UK’s leading choral experts and professionals.
The YCS includes creative residential courses and ongoing musical and mentoring support for four British based young composers, aged between 18-29, from diverse musical and cultural backgrounds. Staged across five residential programmes, the scheme uniquely provides valuable space, time, and the resources for the young composers to experiment with and develop their craft.
Running over a whole year, the YCS offers a rewarding four-phase programme (Discovery, Experimentation, Realisation and Promotion). The young composers in 2024 will be mentored by our guest Lead Mentor Joanna Marsh, and our team of professional choral leaders and composers, as well as masterclasses with distinguised composers.
