Angharad : Open Fund for Music Creators
Towards the creation of Angharad’s debut album, Motherland
Angharad is one of Wales’s most surprising musicians. Established as a fiddle player with an international reputation from her work with award-winning band Calan, she’s recently changed musical direction radically. It took a baby and a global pandemic for Angharad to start singing and song-writing, but what she’s produced is mature, deeply personal and the product of an experienced musician.
Thanks to the support from the PRSf Open Fund, as well as Help Musicians, 2023 will see the release of her debut album, Motherland on Libertino Records. Libertino is currently Wales’s most sought-after label, home to twice-Welsh Music Prize Winners, Adwaith, amongst others. To anyone who is familiar with Angharad Jenkins’ previous work in the folk/roots world, Motherland will come as a surprise, but this is her most honest and personal musical statement to date. This genre-defying album explores the joys and horrors of motherhood, as she gives a voice to the experiences of mothers, which perhaps haven’t been heard in the alternative music scene before. She has her own unique tales to tell as a woman in the music industry too, which she explores and grapples with through song on this album. She also draws inspiration from her geographic motherland of Swansea and Wales. She sings in both Welsh and English, and her sound is subconsciously inspired by the music she grew up listening to through her parents record collection. Artists such as John Cale, Patti Smith and Emmylou Harries all bare their musical mark on this emerging artist.
