Composers’ Fund Grantee: Alex Mills
Recording and production of debut album
Alex Mills is a welsh composer based in London. Mills will record and produce his debut album, which will feature a mixture of existing and new pieces. The Composer has had work performed widely and featured on other artists’ albums, but until now has not released and recorded his own album of works. It will give the Composer the opportunity to collaborate with artists he loves, to create something personal and unique that represents where he is currently at as an artist.
Mills’ work has been performed at the Barbican, Cheltenham Music Festival, Wigmore Hall, King’s Place, Café OTO, The National Gallery, the V&A, Kilkenny Arts Festival, the Sónar music festival, Melbourne Recital Centre, and broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and 4.
He has also written pieces for the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Liam Byrne, Clare O’Connell, Hermes Experiment, EXAUDI, Ligeti Quartet, Juice Vocal Ensemble, and Grammy award-winning ensemble Eighth Blackbird.
His Opera ‘Dear Marie Stopes’ premiered in 2018 at the Welcome Collection, was revived in 2019 at King’s Place, and was called “a first-rate addition to the catalogue of one-act operas” by The Stage.
The Guardian has described his work as: “music of supernatural poignancy, melodic but otherworldly, narratively urgent but poetically impressionistic.”
