Composers’ Fund Grantee: William Mival
A major new work for the Philharmonia Orchestra
Thanks to support from the Laurence Modiano Charitable Trust, William Mival has been commissioned to compose a major new work for the Philharmonia Orchestra. This will be recorded, together with William Mival’s orchestral work Pluen (feather) which was commissioned in 2018 with similar support from the LMCT.
William Mival is a composer and broadcaster and was Head of Composition at the Royal College of Music from 2004 until 2022. During that time he oversaw the considerable development of the faculty which by 2021 was at least double the size of that in any other UK conservatoire. Under him the RCM enhanced its position as a world leader for young composers and a top choice for those seeking to study composition at the highest international level. As a broadcaster he is a frequent contributor to Radio Three’s Record Review and regularly fills the “Building a Library” slot with his choices and recommendations of some of the greatest works in the classical repertoire.
William Mival’s compositions include works for the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Belcea String Quartet, The Sydney Festival and the choirs of Salisbury Cathedral. His ‘Correntandemente’ was selected for performance at the ISCM World Music Days and the Beijing New Music Festival and played by the Tianjin Symphony Orchestra in 2018. In 2019 Pluen (feather) was played by the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra during the Shanghai International Composers Festival. Pluen (feather) will also be heard in the UK in May 2022 when it will be played by the Philharmonia Orchestra.
