James Welland completed his Masters in composition at St. John’s College, Cambridge under the tutelage of Robin Holloway. Since then, he has been exploring methods of bringing counterpoint into a contemporary context as well as pursuing interests in post-spectral composition and the relation of popular music to contemporary classical. He is currently Cambridge University Music Society Composer-in-Residence.

The work supported by the Bliss Trust is a new percussion concerto for Lucy Landymore and the Colchester Symphony Orchestra. This funding will go towards supporting the commission fees for the project. The piece uses grapheme synaesthesia as a primary musical informant, paralleling the strong relationships between words and colours as inspiration for thematic relationships in the music.
