LIFE: Momentum
Merrick Sanders-Green (Mez) is a man worth talking to. You don’t call your band LIFE without some degree of self-confidence, ambition and sense of grandeur. And this from a kid raised in the underdog city of Hull. Mez formed LIFE in 2013 from the ashes of previous post-punk champs The Neat, themselves burnt by sudden departures and shouting matches. His kid brother Mick Sanders stepped up to play guitar. His best mate Loz Etheridge (bass) went with him. Local legend Stewart Baxter (drums) completed the four-piece, no frills line up.
Mez and Mick share lyrical duties, pinging ideas back and forth on their phones until the seeds bear fruit. They write about what they see, hear and read, and as with a lot of young people growing up in Camreon’s Britain, what they see, hear and read often makes them sick. The band’s lyrics are political, angry and humorous in equal measures. On recent single Popular Music, it is with breakneck speed that they manage to convey the despair and reckless hedonism of an entire generation. “TOTALLY OFF MY FACE I LISTEN TO POPULAR MUSIC”. The band’s pride and joy is Hull and Hull is transforming. There is creativity bursting from its seams. The Establishment noticed too, announcing Hull as the 2017 UK City of Culture. LIFE are growing with their city, woven into its fabric. The band’s debut album will see the light of day in early 2017, riding on the coat tails of the city that defines them.
Momentum will help fund recording, mixing and mastering LIFE’s debut album and the album marketing campaign.
